Leadership Notes
| Hello TRI-COW Community, |
| This afternoon at the banner drop, a driver pulled her car over and handed me two red protest hats that she knitted. “These are for you. Thank you for what you are doing.” I leaned into her car, introduced myself, shook her hand and thanked her. We got talking about all things knitting as her friend pulled up next to us. I invited them to join the “Rage Knitting” at NK3. They lit up. “Oh I can do that!” One of the goals for NK3 is to “widen the tent” by engaging new people to join the resistance movement. Today, two knitters found their entry point. This wonderful exchange today reminded me of how important it is to understand why we are participating in this national day of protest called No Kings. It is a mass, large scale protest to demonstrate resistance against authoritarianism across the country and around the world. It serves as a catalyst for change and provides social proof of the growing population saying no to dictatorship. The goals focus on safeguarding democracy, and building and expanding a people-powered movement. No Kings is a brand that represents 100s of coalitions that includes ACLU, Civil Rights, Faith, Veterans, and Labor to name a few. (Check out Nokings.org for a complete list) I highly recommend listening to this video clip from Indivisible’s co-founder Ezra Levin about the strategic logic behind No Kings. https://substack.com/@ezralevin/note/p-186673591?r=5u33n1&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=notes-share-action On March 28, 12:30-2:30 in WRJ, we will stand together at the honk and wave; Rage knitters and crocheters will signal their resistance through art; singers will raise their voices; gravestones will illustrate real lives lost at the hands of ICE and CBP while the evocative sound of bagpipe music will reverberate in the air. Come join us as we stand together building and expanding our people-powered movement of resistance in community and for community. We welcome you. We have a variety of ways to engage. If you want to help, sign up here. Get ready for No Kings 3 at our next Community Art Day at rePlay! Flyer on Home Page |

We will gather outside in one location (look for Kira) with our melt ice red hat projects in process to demonstrate this artistic form of resistance from 12:30-1:30 during the honk and wave. We plan to display all completed hats with a description of their history and relevance today. We hope to offer hats by donation with all proceeds going to Migrant Justice here in Vermont. |

The spectacularly successful Lanes of Engagement program is returning this month, with more time for sharing and discussion in the breakout groups. Vermont Indivisible Network calls are open to anyone who shares Indivisible’s values and objectives and wants to learn more about local opportunities for collective action to protect our freedoms and the future of democracy. |
| Migrant Justice Call to Action – Contact Phil Scott“Johana, Camila, and Cristian have been stuck in detention for four days after being detained by ICE on Wednesday evening. Despite hundreds of brave protestors rallying outside their home – and the fact that none of them were named on the warrant – ICE smashed down their front door with the support of Vermont law enforcement officers and dragged them out. You can read our full account of the day on the Migrant Justice website. On Friday, we took to the streets in Burlington, Vermont, to demand both their freedom and a thorough investigation into state and local police officers’ collaboration with federal immigration officials to carry out Wednesday’s brutal detentions. (NOTE: Johana has been released!) DONATE to help cover legal fees and the families’ living expenses! Johana, Camila, and Cristian‘s families are asking for support via GoFundMe. And if you were horrified by state and local law enforcement’s collaboration with ICE on Wednesday, write to Governor Phil Scott to demand both a thorough investigation and accountability for their misconduct.” Johana was released yesterday! But our support is still needed. |

3. National Events
| No Kings Day – March 28 From National: Last weekend, Leah and I went down to Selma for the Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee’s commemoration of the 61st anniversary of Bloody Sunday and the fight for a real, multiracial democracy. We were there because Indivisible received the Freedom Flame award, and we wanted to experience the history of that pivotal moment in Civil Rights History first-hand. I’d recommend anyone and everyone go next year. You’ll learn from and be inspired by the leaders who paved the road for our democracy with blood, sweat, and tears. You’ll also find lots of friends. We were humbled when Faya Ora Rose Touré, the civil rights legend who cofounded the Jubilee, came up to us and shared a song she’d written for No Kings. You can see the lyrics here. |
